I took it on a hut trip up to the Rockies. It is simple, lightweight and very warm. The outer pockets are tricot lined and zip closed. Inside, this jacket has three pockets. One small zippered pocket for gadgets or snacks, and two generously sized drop pockets which velcro shut. These are great for keeping your gloves warm, or keeping hydration handy during a cold belay. Adjustable alpine cuffs work great to keep out the elements when the wind and snow start blowing. The hood is large enough for a climbing helmet, and is removable by zipper and secures at either side with a snap-button. To wrap it up, the front zipper is heavy duty and will surely last for years. This parka is simultaneously warmer and sports greater coverage than our Alpine Light Down Parka. If you are looking for a do-it-all cold weather parka to keep you warm in whatever the conditions, be it in the city or the high mountains, the Frost Line is your parka. The Frost Line is sized up a little to accommodate layering, so take this into account when sizing.
Light Shell Outer Jacket review by Tyler
This jacket has quickly worked its way into my wardrobe. I originally bought this jacket to use as a wind shell for a climbing trip, and quickly fell in love. The Light Shell Outer Jacket is a lightweight wind shell with a simple brushed tricot liner. We also use our most robust DWR treatment, Polkatex, to give it outstanding water resistance. It is slightly over sized, with longer arms and a drop-seat and is designed to layer up easily underneath.
It is highly packable, durable with a 40-denier nylon shell and warm enough with its minimal lining. It also layers very well with other Mont Bell jackets, like our EX Light down sweater. All in all, the Light Shell is a light, durable, simple and cost effective solution for all your layering needs, and with the great DWR, it will even keep you warm in a drizzle.
