Thru-hiking for Everybody

Ever dream of the summer when you can hike the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, or John Muir Trail? Aren’t sure how to go from dream to reality?
In this approachable take on distance hiking, celebrated thru-hiker Liz Thomas will share stories from her new book, the National Outdoor Book Award winning Long Trails: Mastering the Art of the Thru-hike. With real-life stories from dozens of trails including the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails, Liz showcases expert tips by experienced hikers from all backgrounds.
Part-story-telling, part how-to, this talk includes topics such as: safety, hygiene, gear, nutrition, staying in good graces with family and friends on-and-off trail, and finding the time and money to hike for weeks or months. Attendees are invited for a Q&A afterward as well as a book signing with the author.

About the author:
Liz Thomas is among the most experienced hikers in the U.S. and is known for backpacking light, fast and solo. In 2011, she broke the women’s unsupported speed record on the 2,181-mile long Appalachian Trail, besting the previous record by almost a week. She’s the author of Long Trails: Mastering the Art of the Thru-hike, which won the National Outdoor Book Award calling it destined to become the “bible of the sport.”

Liz has backpacked over 15,000 miles across the United States on 20+ long distance hikes, including the pioneering traverse of the Chinook Trail across the Columbia River Gorge and the pioneering traverse of the Wasatch Range in Utah, which she did solo. Liz has also hiked the Triple Crown of Hiking–the Appalachian Trail, the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail, and the ~3,000 mile Continental Divide Trail.

Liz is honored to serve as Vice President of the American Long Distance Hiking Association-West and as an ambassador for American Hiking Society. When not hiking, Liz lives in Southern California and is a former staff writer for the Wirecutter, part of the New York Times.

Unlike more well-known routes such as the Appalachian Trail or the Colorado Trail, this route is undefined. Paul will be sharing his journey through photos and stories from along the way.

20 Best Hikes Along the Continental Divide Trail in Colorado

“The Best Hikes on the Continental Divide Trail: Colorado” is the first pack guide for the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) published by the Colorado Mountain Club Press. The Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) and author Liz Thomas will present a free event open to the public featuring a slideshow and overview of the 20 stunning day hikes and overnight trips in this guide.

See slides of the high country of Colorado, from Rocky Mountain National Park to the Weminuche Wilderness—the largest wilderness area in Colorado. “Celebrate the Third Anniversary of the Continental Divide Trail Coalition with Author Cindy Ross”

The Continental Divide Trail Coalition (CDTC) will celebrate its Third anniversary by welcoming author and triple crowner, Cindy Ross, to share stories from her book, “Scraping Heaven”. This event is free and open to the public and will take place at the Montbell’s Boulder location.

Ranging from the desert of New Mexico to the mountains of Glacier National Park in Montana, the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDT) is a 3,100 mile-long pathway through some of the most amazing landscapes in America. Along with the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, the CDT is one-third of the “triple crown” of long-distance hiking.

Cindy will be sharing her family's incredible multi-year section hike, ride and bike along the Continental Divide Trail during a time when the Trail was even more remote, backpacking with small children was unheard of, and adventure awaited at every turn.
